The Partner by John Grisham The Partner is one of John Grisham's best books by far! There was a little more description in The Partner, then in The Firm, but this one had a very slow intro. The book opened with an anonymous man living in Brazil under an unknown name. Patrick Lanigan, now known as Danilo Silva, was living a normal life, not making a big deal about the ninety million dollars he had stolen from his ex-law firm two years ago. Danilo is wanted by his ex-law firm buddies, his client from whom he stole the money, and from the FBI. The people that want him the most were the men hired by the client that lost the ninety million, and they were the ones he was afraid of. He knew if the FBI found him he’d be busted, but also safe, if the other thugs found him, he was dead, all they cared about was the money. One day while he was jogging Danilo is kidnapped and taken to a place where he is tortured with electricity and other devious objects. The FBI received a tip that Patrick Lanigan had been captured, and when the FBI found this team of hitmen, and took Patrick, he had already received burns on his skin and charred his flesh. When Danilo returns to his home town, he once again is Patrick Lanigan, and is forced to face up to all the things he has done in his past. The first thing he does is he gets himself a good lawyer, one he knew from his first life, an old buddy from college. Causes of Lying

How many people can say that they have never lied? In all sincerity, there is no one that could confess that. â€Å"A lie is an untruth, a deviation, big or small, from what is known to be real. It is a false statement deliberately presented as being true, thus misrepresenting a situation or giving a totally wrong impression about something† (â€Å"Why people lie†). It’s a natural feeling to want to lie or omit the truth to get out of a difficult situation. Most of the time people are dishonest because they fear that telling the truth will get them in trouble. The main motives that cause people to lie are the attempts to avoid punishment, to seek attention, and to protect others feelings. One of the most common reasons that people â€Å"tweak† the truth is to avoid punishment. The consequences of our actions can sometimes be frightful and in order to cover up a certain incident we find it necessary to blame someone or something else. A good example would be telling a teacher the dog ate your homework. This person blamed the dog to get away with forgetting to do their worksheet; therefore, they avoided getting a zero for the assignment. If a guy sees an attractive woman walk by while he is on a date with his girlfriend, it is normal for him to want to get a better glance. At this point it is reasonable for his â€Å"sweetie† to question if he was staring and if so, why? Of course the boy was admiring the lovely lady’s beauty, but in order to avoid an argument or even a break up the young man simply explains how he only has eyes for his divine girlfriend. In order to stay out of trouble people must do what they have to stay in the clear. If that means another person has to face the cost of another peer’s action, well so be it. Another instance in which lying is quite popular is when individuals want to seek attention. Sometimes people just want to fit in and be accepted by their associates, but in order to do that they must provide false information. â€Å"It boils down to the shifting sands of the self and trying to look good both to ourselves and others, experts say† (Lloyd). Some people lie in order to make their life seem more interesting. Saying that you met a famous celebrity or exaggerating about a social outing can make any social life appear exciting. Most of us want to be the center of attention and in order to get there we must make up stories to capture our friends interest. When a person really likes someone they pretend to be a fan of everything that individual favors just to capture their attention. A lot of times people just want to be perfect and act as if they know everything. In the article â€Å"Why people lie† it says: A person applying for a job may claim proficiency in a certain field he's obviously not very good in because the job requirements state it as a prerequisite. Another such person may similarly claim expertise in a particular area for the sake of impressing his boss, or in hope of promotion. This is called lying to gain an advantage over other people. This is where someone wants to present themselves as a well rounded person to be more qualified for a position. Pretending to be some your not can only take someone so far until their busted. In some cases, what causes us to lie is the need protect other people’s feelings. Lying is usually intended to help ourselves out, but sometimes we do it to keep us from dragging others into our problems. The medical reports are in and it says you have been diagnosed with cancer. The easy thing to do is to tell friends and family about the illness to gain their support. Lately, the people who love you the most have been really stressed out with problems of their own. Since they are having such a difficult time, some may think it would be best to keep the illness a secret. When loved ones ask about the results of the exam you say everything is â€Å"okay†. Dragging others into things that they should not worry about isn’t necessary; it is better if we look after each other’s feelings. When Moms spend a whole day preparing a special meal for their family it sometimes doesn’t turn out so great, but we realize that they dedicated all their time into creating something everyone could enjoy, so we tell them the food was delicious. A common question asked by ladies is if a particular outfit makes them look fat. Although what they are wearing may make them come across as chubby, you say it looks sensational on them to spare them the grief. â€Å"The study, published in the Journal of Basic and Applied Psychology, found that 60 percent of people had lied at least once during the 10-minute conversation, saying an average of 2. 2 inaccurate things† (Lloyd). The truth is a rare thing to hear now and days, but it’s all in the purpose of creating less drama in our day to day lives. Everyone lies, it’s just another part of life, but behind every lie there is a purpose; whether it is to avoid getting a phone taken up or to make someone feel good. Many situations lead to one of these three causes of lying. Sometimes all people want is to protect themselves or to care for others with false reports. At the end of the day millions of individuals would have lied, but the world continues to revolve.

On March 30th there were 79 earthquakes on the mountain. After that minor eruptions occurred daily. On April 3rd there were harmonic tremors signaling the movement of magma deep within the mountain. The crater was 1500 feet wide then. Explosions of ash, ice, and rock were happening almost daily. A harmonic tremor is a sustained release of seismic and/or infrasonic energy most often related to the underground movement of magma and/or the venting of volcanic gases from magma. In late April/early May the north side of the mountain had begun to bulge by 1. 5 meters per day, indicating a build-up of magma and an increase in pressure. By then the mountain had lost its perfect cone shape. It was given the name ‘Mount Fuju of America’. What happened? Impacts? Economic All buildings and manmade structures within the vicinity of Spirit Lake were buried. More than 200 houses and cabins were destroyed and damaged in Skamania and Cowlitz Counties. Bridges, roads, trails, were also destroyed by the eruption. More than 185 miles of highways and 15 miles of railways were also damaged. Around 12% of the total crop was ruined by settling dust. Fruit and alfalfa were hit the hardest. Crops and livestock on valley floors were lost due to flooding. Unemployment around the region of the volcano rose tenfold immediately after the eruption, about weeks following the disaster. This returned to normal after the area was cleaned up. Tourism was nearly crippled in the area after the volcano erupted, however, this was quickly remedied as tourists began pouring in, eager to see the results of the incident. Like with the trees, nothing alive, or inanimate, survived the eruption within the blast zone. Game animals like elks, bears, and deer perished in the area as well; Around 7000 of them died. However smaller rodents and such animals were able to survive, as they were below ground level and/or water surface when the volcano erupted. Salmon and other fish were lost when the hatcheries were destroyed, and an estimated of 40,000 young salmon were lost when they were forced to swim through hydroelectric turbine blades. After the eruption Mount St. Helens was left with a huge crater on its north side. The loss of the north side of the mountain, which was 13% of the cone’s volume, reduced Mount St. Helens’ height by about 1,313  feet and left a crater that was 1 to 2  miles wide and 2,100  feet deep. Responses The government of Washington State set up two zones around the volcano, a ‘Red Zone’ and a ‘Blue Zone’. The red one surrounded the volcano, while the blue one surrounded the red one. The case study focuses on to a non-profit organization namely Helping Hands. The study highlighted the fact that Dharma, the owner of Helping Hand has able to manage the company over the period of five years very effectively. However, economic down turn has increases the need for the services from the organization, which Helping Hand has found extremely tuff to manage properly. However, the increase in the need has induces Dharma to take some emergency management decision so that the company can able to handle the crisis. The study mentioned the fact that the focus organization has faced issues in managing this increase need because of the lack of training and knowledge of the employees. In fact, one of the trusted volunteer of the organization Mark was so much disappointed with the management that he does not want to work for the company anymor e. This induces Dharma to rethink about the implemented management strategy so that the organization can able to handle both internal as well as the external challenges much more effectively. Research: According to Shao, Feng and Hu (2015) leadership is a process that has the capability to influence an individual or group of employees to give their best effort so that the organization can actually able to achieve the goal of the organization. Decision making process is one of the major tool for implementing effective leadership or management style for the company. In this case study, it was mentioned that Dharma who is the owner of the Helping Hand has able to manage the company effectively before the increase in the need for services has arise. However, management of Helping Hand has tries to implement strategies to fill up gaps s that the organization can somehow manage the crisis (Gosling et al. 2012). Therefore, Jenny was given the responsibility to manage and train the volunteers without any proper training. This has created difficulties in the internal organization process. Since, Mark mentioned that Jenneys leadership has created groups or division within the members of the organization. In fact, Jenny was found to criticize employees publicly even for minimal mistakes. According to Renko et al. (2015) the concept of leadership is continuously evolving as organizations have to face different types of challenges every day. As a result, leaders or managers of an organization have to have specific set of skills and knowledge in order to overcome difficult situation of the organization much more effectively. However, Helping Hand does not provide enough training to Jenny on the kind of approach she has to take so that the organization can able to motivate all its volunteers to give their best effort to achieve organizational goal (Sehrawat and Sharma 2014). As a result, Jennys leadership approach has gone in completely different direction as compared to the organizational goals. It was found that in spite of encouraging the volunteers to give their best for the organization, she behave rudely with the volunteers, which completely de-motivated all the employees. As opined by Saleem, Saqib and Zahra (2015) no organization can work effectively without havi ng motivated employees. Therefore, it can be said that the prime difficulties that Helping Hand is facing is because of the ineffective leadership or man management style. Hence, Dharma or management of the company will have to restructure its present level of leadership style so that the company can able to manage the present level of crisis. Analysis: According to Solomon, Costea and Nita (2016) leadership is arguably the most important factor within the organization. Since, it has the capability to utilize all the resources of an organization in such a way that it can able to meet the objective of the company. As mentioned earlier, Helping Hand needs to restructure its leadership style in such a way that it can actually able to motivate all its volunteers to achieve organizational goals. According to Mwenda and Wachira (2015) employee motivation not only helps the organization improve present level of efficiency but also have positive impact on the communication process among the employees. Effective communication helps organization to develop cohesiveness among the employees. In addition, Helping Hands deals in the non-profit sector. Therefore, most of employees of the organization work as a volunteer. Therefore, management style of the organization will have to be develop in such a way in which all the employees can able to fee l them as an essential part of the organization (Lamdin 2012). This not only increases bonding between management and volunteers but will also induce them to give their best at the workplace so that the organization can actually able to fill up the increase in the need of the society. As per the article by Wilson and Thompson (2014) developing team for handling the responsibility of the organization is one of the prime objective of the leaders. Specifically, in the non-profit organizations, team development is extremely important. Since, the prime objective of the company is to provide help for the society. It demands the entire organization to be on the same page (Cunningham, Salomone and Wielgus 2015). Otherwise, the company might not able to fulfill the objective. In case of Helping Hand, Jennys rude behavior with the volunteers has created many groups within the organization. It highlighted the fact that the management has selected wrong person for the providing training to the employees. In addition, lack of communication between Jenny and Dharma is also can be identified in this study, which created a major negative impact on the leadership style. As per the article by Hackman and Johnson (2013) the capability of leaders is tested at the most when they have to manage employees of an organization that is going through the transition period. In this case also Dharmas leadership style was found to be not worthy as one of the senior volunteer of the company has express to leave the organization. To implement any change or increase the responsibility of the employees, management first have to estimate the kind of future impact this can made on the employees motivation level. The management also does not express any concern before selecting an individual for performing a particular management job (Style, Beale and Ellery 2012). As a result, the personnel found to be wanting at the time of execution of the organization plan. Hence, the case study highlighted the fact that leadership is a kind of skill, which not everyone has equally. Therefore, it is up to the management of the organization to implement right strategy so that the rig ht person can be selected from the lot, which will help the organization to meet its objective. Conclusion: The above analysis have identified the fact that the focus organization Helping Hand does not focus too much on the kind of negative impact that an ineffective leadership style can have on the daily processes of the company. Since, it has managed to see only success from the starting time of the organization. It might induce the management or Dharma to become a little overconfident that the company has the potential to handle any situation without proper guidance. As a result, Jenny was given the responsibility to handle the volunteers without any briefing from the management level on what exactly she has to do to perform her role effectively. It increases the stress level of Jenny. For obvious reason, no stressed-out management can manage any organization or a group of employees effectively, which happens in case of Jenny as well. As a result, Helping Hand has experiences volunteers whom are completely de-motivated towards their work. It also induces them to create sub groups within the organization, as they were not given the opportunity by the management to share their view on what kind of strategy that the company needs to adopt to manage this crisis situation effectively. Recommendation: From the above study, it can be identified that Helping Hands present leadership style will not help the company in any form to face the organizational challenges. Hence, Helping Hand firstly need to develop a develop a proper work culture within the organization in which every employees or volunteers will be given the opportunity to express their views and thoughts before implementing any important strategic decision. This is important because it not only affects the motivation level of the employees but also help the company to develop a team, which will work together to meet the organization goal of the company. In the present situation, the management first has to inform and educate the employees regarding the present situation of the economy so that the employee can able to understand the importance of giving extra effort for the well being of the society. The management also has to evaluate the future impact of any strategy before implementation. It will help the company to pre pare to overcome the challenges of the implemented strategy much more effectively. The organization can also influence other people from the society to work for the well-being of the society. As it not only help to minimize the pressure from the present number of volunteers but will also have a positive impact on the implemented strategy of the company.
